1 D P P-4 Inhibitors D P P 4 Inhibitors Prolong endogenous G L P1 activity, reduce hepatic glucose output between meals ,and are generally weight neutral.
Often added to Metformin as combination therapy.
e.g. sitagliptin, saxagliptin
2 S G L T 2 Inhibitors S G L T2 Inhibitors Promote urinary glucose excretion and cause weight loss primarily target glucose excretion via the kidneys rather than suppressing liver glucose production between meals.
Most often recommended for patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
3 Sulfonylureas Stimulate insulin secretion
Risk of weight gain and hypoglycemia
4 TZD Thiazolidinedione
Increase insulin sensitivity
Associated with weight gain
5 Loop Diuretics Deplete potassium and magnesium
6 Zidovudine (Retrovir) Treats HIV
Impairs DNA synthesis especially in rapidly dividing cells, like RBCs.
May result in Megaloblastic Anemia
7 Phenytoin Treats Seizures
Absorption impaired when taken with food or supplements. Take separately.
Interferes with calcium absorption, vitamin D metabolism
May increase need for folate and thiamin
Supplement folate, usu ~1mg/ day
May also require Vit D, Calcium, and thiamine supplementation with long-term use
